Maria Reva's Endling, longlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize, begins as something close to a heist comedy. Yeva is a maverick biologist crossing Ukraine in a mobile lab, trying to breed rare snails on the edge of extinction and funding the work by posing as a bride for Western men on "romance tours." Nastia and her sister Solomiya are caught up in the same marriage industry, searching for their mother, an activist who vanished. Then they kidnap a vanful of bachelors, and on that same day, Russia invades, shattering…
